The Misadventures of Mr and Mrs Anubis

Now we’re in trouble…….

3900 Saturdays September 23, 2007

The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday mornings. Perhaps it’s
the quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it’s
the unbounded joy of not having to be at work.  Either way, the first few
hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable.

A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the garage with a steaming
cup of coffee in one hand and the morning paper in the other.
What began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those
lessons that life seems to hand you from time to   time. Let me tell you
about it:

I turned the dial up into the phone portion of the band on my ham
radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning swap net.  Along the way, I
came across an older sounding chap, with a tremendous signal and a golden
voice. You know the kind; he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting
business.  He was telling whom-ever he was talking with something about “a
thousand marbles.” I was intrigued and stopped to listen to what he had to

“Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you’re busy with your job. I’m sure
they pay you well but it’s a shame you have to be away from home and your
family so much.  Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or
seventy hours a week to make ends meet.  It’s too bad you missed your
daughter’s “dance recital” he continued.  ;”Let me tell you something that
has helped me keep my own priorities.” And that’s when he began to explain
his theory o f a “thousand marbles.”

“You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic.  The
average person lives about seventy-five years. I know, some live more and
some live less, but on average, folks live about seventy-five years.

“Now then,  I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3900, which
is the number of  Saturdays that the  average person has in their entire
lifetime. Now, stick with me, Tom, I’m getting to the important part.

It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this
in any detail”, he went on, “and by that time I had lived through over
twenty-eight hundred Saturdays.” “I got to thinking that if I lived to be
seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy.
So I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had.  I ended
up having to visit three toy stores to round up 1000 marbles I took them
home and put them inside a large, clear plastic container right here in the
s hack next to my gear.”

“Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown
it away. I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on
the really important things in life.

There’s nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out
to help get your priorities straight.”

“Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign-off with you and
take my lovely wife out for breakfast. This morning, I took the very last
marble out of the container. I figure that if I make it until next Saturday
then I have bee n given a little extra time. And the one thing we can all
use is a little more time.”

“It was nice to meet you Tom, I hope you spend more time with your
family, and I hope to meet you again here on the band.  This is a
75 Year old Man, K9NZQ, clear and going QRT, good morning!”

You could have heard a pin drop on the band when this fellow signed
off. I guess he gave us all a lot to think about. I had planned to work on
the antenna that morning, and then I was going to meet up with a few hams to
work on the next club newsletter.

Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. “C’mon
honey, I’m taking you and the kids to breakfast.” “What brought this on?”
she asked with a smile “Oh, nothing special, it’s just been a long time
since we spent a Saturday together with the kids. And hey, can we stop at a
toy store while we’re out? I need to buy some marbles.
And so, as one smart bear once said…”If you live to be a hundred,
I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live
without you.” – Winnie the Pooh.

Pass this on to all of your FRIENDS, even if it means sending it to
the person that sent it to you.

And if you receive this  many times from many different
people, it only means that you have many FRIENDS.

And if you get it but once, do not be discouraged for you will know
that you have at least one good friend…

And that would be ME

Tina… September 20, 2007

I am going to make this one short and sweet since it is a sad one.  My friend of 9 years Tina Kennedy passed away last Saturday.  She was 34.  I am not sure who all knew her but those who did were lucky to know a really wonderful person.  I hadn’t seen her in about a year and just the Friday before she died she emailled me saying happy anniversary and that we needed to meet up to catch up.  She died the next day.  She lived about 2 hours away and since I didn’t work with her anymore, I didn’t see her much.  Everyone… remember that life is precious and that even an email to say hi will keep you in touch with your friends no matter the distance.  I should have visited more or called, but everyone knows that life gets in the way.  I will miss Tina.

My current obsession…. September 10, 2007

With so many things that I have to bitch about, I thought that I would take time to blog about one truly decadent guilty pleasure.  Smut.  You got it.  Dirty smutty raunchy romance novels.  In the past, I was never a smut girl.  I was more interested in Oprah’s book club or a new literary feat.    My mom and my best girl Tiffany were always smut aficionados and me I just never got hooked.  This weekend ended all of that.

I needed reading material while lounging at the pool on Saturday.  My mom being the smut enthusiast naturally only had those wonderful books available to read.  Let me tell you.  I couldn’t put the crap down.  It was like a car accident.   You know you really shouldn’t be looking at this, but something inside of you pulls your interest.  Let me tell you once you go smut you never go back.  As I lay at the pool sunning myself, oiling my body, I read almost the entire book!  I would have read more, but I got a text from my mom to tell me it was time to leave for dinner.  It was pure heaven.  My mind was not thinking.  It was being consumed by this fabulous literary piece of art.  I started to think, with all of the stressful things in my life I need a mindless indulgence.  Hey at least I’m reading right.  I can’t concentrate on anything deep right now.  I need this.  I need the dirty books like they are my drugs.  If you are wondering, the book of choice was Danielle Steel’s Rock Star.  Fabulous and wonderful mindless enjoyment!  I suggest everyone develop one guilty pleasure and this my friends would be an excellent choice.

Now my husband informed me that he has several smut books somewhere in our home.  He was once the manager of a Crown Books store, and when they went out of business he reaped the rewards.  I think years ago he may have mentioned it to me, but I just shrugged it off.  There was a time I was too good for smut.  Now I find myself wanting more.  I think it’s like heroin.  The first time you try it you are immediately hooked.  Well… Here I am!  Sign me up for the smut book of the month club.  Screw Oprah.

September is a great month September 7, 2007

I always love this time of year, when summer winds down and fall begins.  I love the fall!  I love the fall flowers, pumpkins, wine fests!  You name it.  I also love September because I was married in this month……..and because there are so many people I love who have their birthdays right around the same time.  Literally.  My dad and Sarah are one day apart.  My nephew is the 27th.

Another thing I’m loving about this September is my first Real Estate sale with Advance.  I actually settled in August, but cashed my check in September.  Real Estate is a tough business, especially when you are working another job as well and finishing up one degree just to start another.  I work at the office about twice a week trying to get sales, but it’s been really slow.  I sat last night for 3 hours and the phone did not ring at all.  I know a lot of you are going to be looking soon, so please keep me in mind when you do.  It is a lot of fun to look at houses.  I love being nosy.  Plus you would be helping out a friend.  I don’t know if all of you are aware but I only get paid when I sell a house.  I have sold one house in 5 months.  It is a really nice treat to have a sale, but I appreciate everyone’s support.  Please  let everyone know I  am a  Realtor and if you are buying call me.  I also have friends and family who are loan officers who can help you out!  My feelings would be a little hurt if any of you did not think of me and used another agent.

I’m off to the beach today.  If you need me the cell is on (both of them if you are an Empire employee).  I have more blogs to come… One about proffessionalism at work and how it sucks when your job rewards employees for bad behavior, one about M and T bank, and one about my second wedding anniversary that is coming up!  I’m sure I will also blog about next weekend which is the MD wine fest and Ms. Sarah’s birthday bash!
